Root Hair Infection
This NSF-funded project uses functional genomics to investigate the process of legume root hair infection by nitrogen-fixing rhizobia. This infection initiates the symbiosis between this bacterium and its host that will result in the de novo formation of a novel organ, the nodule.

Genome Sequencing and Analyses
In a collaborative project, funded by NSF, between the Univ. of Missouri, Washington Univ. Genome Center and Orion Genomics, sample sequencing of the soybean genome was done to test methylfiltration as a means to enrich for gene-rich segments of the genome.

Maps
An integrated map of soybean for resolution and dissection of multiple genome duplication events. Washington Univ. Genome Center and Orion Genomics, sample sequencing of the soybean genome was done to test methylfiltration as a means to enrich for gene-rich segments of the genome.

Seed Biology
Soybean is the second most important agricultural commodity and number one oil seed crop in the US. It occupies more than 28% of the total acreage of crops planted in the US with an estimated value of over $18 billion.

Soybean Rust
Soybean rust, caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi Sydow, has been known in Australia, Asia, Africa and South America, and has now become established in North America. Significant yield losses varying from 40 to 90% have been reported in Asian countries when environmental conditions were conducive for disease development.

Soybean Cyst Nematode
Soybean cyst nematode (SCN, Heterodera glycines Ichinohe) is among the most economically destructive pests of soybean in the United States. The most recent estimate shows that SCN causes a 2 to 6 % annual yield loss worth $1 billion each year.

Drought Genomics
Drought is the major abiotic stress factor limiting crop productivity worldwide. Water is an increasingly limited resource, and water availability limits crop productivity in many parts of the U.S. and the world.
